Jacksonville Beach, FL – For the fifth consecutive year, the Florida Surfing Association, Aqua East Surf Shop and the George’s Music Springing the Blues music festival have joined forces to present the Surfing the Blues Spring Surf Fest on Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6.
Spectators can expect to see the area’s top surfers competing for $5000 in prizes (First place champion receives $2000 in the Open Pro Challenge!), while soaking up the sun and the fantastic music from the Springing the Blues festival that is just footsteps away from the event.
This year’s Surfing the Blues contest kicks off at the south end of the Jacksonville Beach Pier on Saturday morning with qualifying heats in 5 shortboard divisions, including Boys 14 and under, Juniors 17 and under, Open Shortboard, Open Women, and the Open Pro Challenge. There is a $25 entry fee for amateurs and $100 for the Open Pro.
With this popular contest offering the largest pro purse payout in Jacksonville, crowds are guaranteed to see some of the best surfers in the region. That has included in past years internationally-ranked Northeast Florida natives Asher Nolan and Karina Petroni who delivered spectacular, crowd-pleasing performances. This year’s event is sure to live up to past competitions with local up-and-comers Cody and Evan Thompson, Shane Murray and Ryan Briggs added to the mix, with Briggs hoping to best his second place finish last year to take the top prize in the Open Pro challenge.
“I can’t wait for this,” said Briggs, a Ponte Vedra Beach resident. “We don’t get many contests like this here in Jacksonville. The big purse, of course, is a draw, but it’s just a fun contest because you get to surf with all the local surfers and we really like competing with each other.”
Entry forms for the Surfing the Blues Spring Surf Fest are available at the Neptune Beach location of Aqua East Surf Shop and online at Florida Surfing.org. All entry forms and fees must be received by April 1, 2008.
