The Ben Bourgeois Interview

Dear ladies, we here at TransWorld SURF love you. And since it’s Valentine’s Day this weekend, we felt we needed to treat you to something special—a little piece of editorial dedicated to you. Instead of flowers or candy we thought we’d give you something guaranteed to fill that need in your life. Your man may wine and dine you, but if he really loves you he’ll let you sit down and enjoy a few special minutes with the North Carolina heartthrob named Ben Bourgeois. You see ladies, Ben’s a lover. A super nice guy who’s single, loves long walks on the beach, and special dinners by candlelight. We caught up with Benny the other day to ask him about his future plans, his recent switch to Reef as his main sponsor, and most of all, what he’s looking for in a lady. If you’re worried about Ben and the Reef bootie models, don’t, company policy says he can’t touch them. Ben’s all about you. So sit back, relax, and let Ben take you to that special romantic place on Valentine’s Day.—Checkwood

You recently signed a big contract with Reef for shoes and clothes. It’s a huge change for you considering you’ve been with Quiksilver your whole life.

Yeah, it was a big change, but I’ve with Reef the same amount of time I’ve been with Quiksilver so it wasn’t that big of a change. It’s good, it’s going really good actually.

Do they have a different plan for you than Quiksilver did in terms of what you’re actually gonna be doing?

Not really a different plan—they’re pretty much leaving it up to me to do what I want to do and they’re backing me and I’m gonna be getting a lot more coverage from them. I’m gonna get a lot more of the advertising and all that stuff—a lot more advertising not just in the U.S., but around the world so that’s huge for me.

Last year you were pretty high in the ‘QS rankings and you chose not to do the last ‘QS’s. Why’d you do that when you could have easily qualified?

Yeah, I don’t know. I guess I was just going through a couple of things—sponsorship stuff. I didn’t have much incentive to make it. There was no one really saying, “Oh if you make it … I was just going through a weird time and now that I got it all worked out—I actually got everything worked out really well. This year is looking really good and I have some good incentive to make it. All my sponsors are backing me to make it too and they want me to do it and it’s gonna go a lot smoother.

So you do want to be on the ‘CT?

Yeah, I do want to be back on the ‘CT for sure. I’m only doing the big events—I’m not in Brazil doing the four stars right now. So I’ll still have a lot of time to do a bunch of other stuff. I definitely want to get back in there.

What have you been doing in that time?I’ve gone on quite a few trips, kind of reworked all my (sponsorship) deals, and that’s about it really. That’s about it. Time’s flying by—that’s for sure.

You’ve been getting skunked on a lot of trips lately?

Yeah, I’ve had a couple bad ones back to back.

Is there a black cloud following you?

Not really a black cloud, just the swell’s not following me.

We here at TransWorld get a lot of letters from a lot of girls asking whether you’re single or not, if you have a lady, and how to get a hold of you. For all the ladies, what do we need to tell ’em?

I want to know what all those girls are doing that are asking about me. Yeah, I’m single.

So if a girl reads this online, how can she find you, but what should she look like?

Dark skin, dark hair, that’s about it.

By the way, I was just joking about those letters.

That’s what I was thinking, let me see those letters—I’ll write ’em back.

If you can look forward to one thing this year, what are you looking forward to most?

I’m looking forward to the whole year all around. I’m just really excited it’s a new year—a start fresh kind of thing. I got a new sponsor, a lot of things have changed and I’m looking forward to going back to Australia and the whole year in general.
