It’s back after two decades! The Florida State Surfing Championships! Nicknamed “States. From ages 10 to 55, amateur to pro, this event will crown State Champions in 28 different divisions at the most consistent surf break in Florida. What will prove to be a high profile, premiere event in the surfing world, we are hedging the bet in support of great extended forecasts while hosting States at the south jetty in New Smyrna Beach, October 11-12, 2003. Nicknamed “States. From ages 10 to 55, amateur to pro, this event will crown State Champions in 28 different divisions at the most consistent surf break in Florida.

Adding to the excitement, the event will launch a new surfing organization — The Florida Surfing Association, and will qualify surfers for the US Championships next summer in California. Sanctioned by the United States Surfing Federation, the national governing body for the sport of surfing in the US as designated by the International Olympic Committee, the Florida State Surfing Championships will run in conjunction with The Betty Series Pro Challenge.

The Betty Series, a female extreme sports company hosting Pro Am events at the national and international level, will award a combined $5000 purse to top talents of the Pro Longboard and Shortboard Divisions. The contest stands as a qualifier for next summer’s World Championships in Cape Hatteras, NC. Betty Series competitors must compete in at least 3 of the qualifying events leading up to their Championships. The Florida State Surfing Championships lists as the 3rd of 7 events in the qualifying schedule.

The FSSC hosts Pro Junior Division (19 and under), Pro Longboard and a Pro Open Mens Division, as well as a plethora of amateur divisions including the SUPER GROM. Entry fees for the Super Groms are free (max. 72) and each competitor receives a Medal of Participation. A special commemorative trophy has been commissioned by Florida artist Gary Mack for all the finalists. All competitors will go home with an event sweatshirt featuring Mack’s art as well.

Prepare to watch as some of the best East Coast talents surf their way to being a state Champion. New Smyrna is a true surf spot with consistent and rideable surf conditions nearly every day. It is largely know for the influx of hot surfers representing the area and travelers from sister peaks within the region. This event is sure to drive competitive spirits, and is a great opportunity for everyone to come and watch Florida’s best surfers compete.
