The HB Surf Series Get Ready For A New Season

HB, CA, March 12, 2002 — HB Surf Series, formerly a Pro/Am Surf competition, has redesigned its format to become the first Pro/Junior series ever in California and taken on higher-power mainstream sponsorship. Del Taco will be the Blanket and Airshow sponsor for this year?s events. The series, entering its eighth season, consists of four contests located on the Southside of the pier in Huntington Beach on May 3-5, June 7-8, July 12-14, and the series championship September 13-15.
Del Taco?s Director of Marketing, Joe Senger, explains, “We are stoked to be part of the HB Pro/Junior Surf Series.” “The whole surfing lifestyle is a major part of the youth culture today no matter where you live. Del Taco is always looking for great partnerships like the HB Pro/Junior Surf Series to help position our brand.” Senger continued, “We are planning some great things in our chain this year to reach out to the youth and young adult market. Sports marketing is a key element in our growth strategy.” With almost 400 restaurants across the country, Del Taco is the second largest Mexican/American chain in the United States.
Seth Matson, the event?s director said of the Del Taco sponsorship, “It?s great to see Del Taco, a company that has no particular interest in surfing over any other particular sport, choose to partner with us. I think that relationships like this demonstrate how mainstream companies are seeing value in marketing to traditionally non-mainstream sports. These sponsorships tend to legitimize our sport. Surfing and the beach lifestyle have been growing in popularity to people from all geographic areas. I can see why they were interested in joining us this season. This is just the beginning!”
The event this year will target the best of the young up and coming rippers. This new Pro/Junior format is a much-needed change. It will help train young amateurs into strong, smart and experienced professional competitors, as well as give the young pros a chance to showcase their talents in front of a big venue, preparing them for the WQS and World Circuit Tours. Preparations are underway to make this the most competitive season yet. These events will produce the next generation of California?s best. The pier at Huntington is synonymous with the sport of surfing on mainland USA. HB Pro/Junior Surf Series is proud to have all of its contests at this prestigious spot.
This new generation of surfers will be competing for some incredible prizes. Each event will pay out $2,000 cash to the winner and the 1st place overall rated winner in the Pro/Junior ratings will win a round trip ticket to Indonesia. Del Taco sponsors the new “Macho” Air Show with a $500.00 prize being awarded to the surfer who grabs the biggest, cleanest aerial and /or most radical maneuver in a four man final at each event. The 1st place overall winner of the Macho Airshow will win a round trip ticket to Hawaii. That?s not all! The 1st place overall winner in every amateur division will win a round trip ticket to Cabo San Lucas!
