The North Shore Gets Ready For The 2002 XCEL Pro At Sunset Beach On The North Shore Of Oahu

The 19th Annual Xcel Pro at Sunset Beach is set to kick off the North Shore winter surf season on October 28, 2002. The $21,000.00 Xcel Pro which is part of the Association of Surfing Professional’s World Qualifying Series features 132 surfers in four days of competition. With a 14-day waiting period that ends on November 10, 2002 Xcel Pro officials and surfers are anticipating solid surf in the 6 to 10 feet and bigger range. In addition to the big wave short board event some of the world’s greatest longboarders will also get a chance to show their knowledge of the shifty line up and big wave skills as the Xcel Longboard Invitational will feature eight surfers riding traditional longboards. The Longboard Invitational will run on the last day of surfing between the semi finals and final heats.

With modern technology and forecasting, the Xcel Pro staff will be monitoring the surf beginning on October 21 and alerting media as to potential arrival of surf from the first day of the waiting period. Surf News Network surf line will give updates after 7:00 AM at 596-7873 (596-SURF).
