Honolulu, (July 18, 2005) – More than 200 highly collectible items, the largest surf book signing in history, a Thursday night preview at the Green Room Gallery, a silent auction and an intense live-auction are just days away, with the Quiksilveredition Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction set for this Saturday, July 23, at the Blaisdell Center.

This year’s collection of vintage surf items dates from the 1800’s, up to the 1980s. It includes surfboards and paddleboards from the various eras, artwork, posters and other items.

The oldest item up for auction is an article written by a missionary in 1822 that portray surfers and is believed to be the first surf-riding article ever published in a magazine.

The surfboard collection features wood boards from the ’30s & 40’s, balsa surfboards from the ’50s, classic “elephant guns from the ’60s, and progressive shortboards of the ’70s — including shapes from Ben Aipa, Dick Brewer, Joe Quigg, and Gerry Lopez’s personal big wave gun that he rode in the movie Big Wednesday.

Surf art includes that of well-known artists Mike Doyle and John Severson as well as Big Islanders, Mike Field and Surf Photos Hawaii photographer, Tim McCullough.

Other special items include the original welcoming banners from the Makaha International Surfing Championships, then displayed at Waikiki and Makaha to welcome both competitors and the public. There’s also a Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau trophy autographed by 1986 winner Clyde Aikau, along with a full set of Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau event posters and bumper stickers. Original movie posters from the release of Endless Summer have also been uncovered.

Altogether, an unbelievable collection of surfing history will be on display and up for auction at the one location.
