Rip Curl Pro 2004
Today the 18th Annual Rip Curl Pro in Southern France kicks off a week of top-level surfing on some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.
The 6-star WQS event will feature some 300 competitors from around Europe and the world competing for $125,000 US in prize money. European surfers featured in the event will include Eric RĂ©biere, Patrick Beven, Micky Picon, Tiago Pires, and Alain Riou, as well as lots of the talent from the World Championship Tour, which is currently on a month-long break before the second half of the WCT season.
The Rip Curl Pro is held in a mobile-contest format, where the event location can change on a daily basis depending on weather and wave availability, making sure event is held in the best available waves in the region.
Rip Curl and event partners Cool Water, Ford, and Bouygues Telecom expect some 50,000 spectators down at la plage to see if 2003 Winner, Australian Trent Munro can repeat or if a new name will be added to the prestigious list of past event winner which include: Joel Parkinson (2001), C.J. Hobgood (2000), Rob Machado (1997), Kelly Slater (1992 & 1996), Martin Potter (1990), Tom Curren (1989), and Tom Carroll (1988 & 1991).
There’s great nightlife in the beach towns of Southern France, so if you can get down to Hossegor and check it all out. Friday night, August 27 at La Centrale in Hossegor, you can catch the world premiere of Rip Curl’s new film Freak Show and hear live music from former Rip Curl Pro dominator, three-time world champ, and honorary French citizen Tom Curren.
The Cool Water Expression Session will take place Sunday the 29th at 2:00 p.m. Expression sessions have become showplaces for cutting edge progressive surfing, so heading down and checking out Europe’s and the world’s finest could be nice way to spent a beautiful summer day.
