The Subaru Baja PSTA US Championships Set For Ventura’s Seaside Park This Weekend

Subaru Baja PSTA US Championships Ventura’s Seaside Park October 18 — 20, 2002 Ventura, CA — Seaside Park, will host the 2002 Professional Surfing Tour of America Subaru Baja US Championships. The contest, which is set for October 18th — 20th will feature 144 competitors, including the nation’s best surfers. The venue will be the third visit to Seaside Park for the PSTA. Previous tour events have been held in San Clemente (Lower Trestles); Imperial Beach Pier; Oceanside Pier; San Clemente Pier; Huntington Beach at Goldenwest street and Morro Bay at the Rock. The 2002 tour is the largest for the PSTA featuring seven events and over 25 different competitions. The US Championships will crown 2002 champions in men’s shortboard, women’s shortboard, men’s longboard and the PSTA Junior (13-15), the event also offers any local professional or amateur surfers a chance to test their skill against the PSTA’s Best competitors. The event will feature pros surfers, 1999 PSTA Champion Jeff Hurley, 2000 champion Jeremy Sommerville, 2001 and 2002 champion Ryan Simmons. In the women’s division, 1999 Champion Holly Beck, 2001 champion Julia Christian and current tour point’s leader Jodie Nelson. The point’s race has never been closer in the women’s or longboard division. In the Men’s longboard division, Josh Mohr, the current points leader will have to work hard to defend his title against Josh Baxter, only 150 points separate the two competitors vying for the 2002 US title.

The 2002 US Championships will co-incide with the seasons first Northwest groundswell with surf expected to be in the 4 — 6 foot range for much of the competition, the PSTA is closely monitoring the wave forecasts and looks forward to great conditions for the event. Competition is scheduled to start on Friday, October 18th at 8:00 a.m. and continue through October 20th with the awards scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on the PSTA awards stage. The competition he being held adjacent to the Ventura County Fairgrounds and is accessible by Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner.
