Without a doubt, Josh Kerr is one of the most exciting surfers in the world to watch at work. Hard charging and an undisputed master of progressive surfing, Kerr has once again qualified for the ASP World Tour—his third go at the big leagues. Temporarily relocated to Carlsbad, California, we caught up with Kerrzy as he got ready for the 2011 World Tour at an undisclosed North County reef.
TransWorld SURF: When did you first qualify for the then WCT?
Josh Kerr: 2007 was my first year on tour.
Was that the year you had that amazing heat against Mick Fanning at firing Snapper Rocks?
Yeah! That was my first ever 'CT event.
Above: An epic 2007 clash between then tour rookie Josh Kerr and Mick Fanning at Snapper Rocks—a spot they both call home.
What were the circumstances that saw you fall off that first time?
I just wasn’t ready for it to be so grueling, that and we had shit waves all year. I was thinking it was meant to be the "Dream Tour" but it wasn’t so dreamy…
When did you make it back the second time?
I was off the World Tour in 2008 and back on in 2009.
How'd you fall off? Weren't there some injuries involved?
I was sitting at 20th, injured my ankle, and didn't get the injury wildcard at the end of the year.
Now that you've made it for the third time, what are you going to do to stay there?
Just do my thing and hopefully get rewarded for it…oh, and stay fit!
What tour stops do you think suit your surfing best?
The hollow beachbreaks [France, Portugal] and the onshore points [Snapper Rocks, Trestles].
Where do you think you'll be most challenged?
Jeffrey's Bay in South Africa.
Are you planning to stay in SoCal as opposed to the Gold Coast? What it is about SoCal you like? Don't like?
Yeah, for the near future I'll be in SoCal. I like how many options of things there are to do here. I just wish they had surf clubs overlooking the beach to have a beer at in the afternoon…
So do I. On a side note, how's your buddy Matty Scorringe doing with his fight against cancer?
He is in remission and getting barreled again!
That's great news! Did you make any New Years resolutions?
Make it bigger and better than 2010.
Give us one bold prediction for 2011.
Slater will win his 11th world title in 2011.
You really went out on a limb there, Kerrzy. Thanks for your time mate and best of luck when Snapper rolls around!
