[IMAGE 1]Recently, there’s been a lot of talk about this kid from San Clemente named Travis Mellem and some kind of contract with No Fear. Travis is a real-good surfer who all of a sudden has become the sort of kid that people point out when he’s surfing his heats-he’s the new mini-man. He’s also a real funny, real nice kid-enjoy his interview. -AC
How old are you?
Where do you come from?
San Clemente, California.
Who are your sponsors?
No Fear, Becker, Sticky Bumps, Surf One, Reef, and Oakley.
What’s your local break?
Who are your favorite surfers in San Clemente?
Probably Shea Lopez.
Just cause he’s really good and fluid and doing pretty good in contests. He’s from Florida, but lives here now. He’s just basically fun to watch.
So how was your trip you took to Puerto with TransWorld?
It was fun getting beat up and stuff. It was fun, I got a couple of little barrels.
[IMAGE 2]Are you looking forward to travelling more?
Yeah, I want to. I want to see everyone’s culture’s and learn more.
What are your plans for the future?
My goal is to make it pro and make the top 44. Take a few years off school and see where I can go with it.
Do you ever feel pressure to succeed, to do well in contests?
Yeah in bigger contests, you just want to good to make the sponsors happy and just get your name out there. We have a couple here and there.
What do you like to do when you’re at home?
I like spearfishing and skateboarding around.
Doesn’t spear fishing get crazy, do you ever see sharks or anything like that?
No, I’ve never seen a shark, but I’ve seen a couple of hugeseals-that’s fun. They’re a lot bigger under water.
What’s the dumbest thing that’s happened to you?
Probably going to Puerto with Blair. No I’m joking. I don’t know.
