Sydney, Australia — O’Neill International, is happy to announce the signing of Australian Trent Munro to Team O’Neill for the next three years. Munro will be the first O’Neill surfer to represent all O’Neill products world wide – wetsuits, clothing, footwear, and accessories.
Munro is one of Australia’s most high profiled surfers. His competitive career started at seven years of age when he won the sub cadets point score at his local board riders club in the little coastal town of Scott’s Head (population 1,000). From there he went on to be the youngest ever competitor to be selected to compete in the NSW State Titles.
Munro’s record of victories is second to none. In 1997 Munro won the Australian Junior and The Billabong Junior series in the same year. He has won nearly every major pro junior around the world.
1998 was Munro’s first full year competing on the WQS. That year he returned from injury and won his first WQS contest in Japan, the Irako Pro. This same year Munro won the world’s second most prestigious Pro Junior, the Quicksilver Capbreton Pro Junior in France. Munro finished in 86th position on the 1998 WQS, an amazing result for his first year, and if not for his injury he would have finished much higher.
In 1999 Munro, along with Out There Management (which is owned by his Father, Wayne Munro), set out to develop new goals and clearer strategies. His major goal was to qualify for the 2001 World Championship Tour.
Last year at the age of 22, Munro achieved his goal after his win in the 4 Star WQS Maresias Surf Pro in Brazil. This secured his position in the top 44 with the Hawaiian WQS leg still to remain. Munro finished the year on the WQS in 12th place and is part of the large Australian contingent for the 2001 WCT.
Munro’s performance on the 2001 WCT will be enhanced considerably due to the support and commitment available to all Team O’Neill surfers.
Says Munro: “To compete at this level you need a sponsor that understands your needs and wants. O’Neill is a company that is internationally recognised as a company for taking professional surfers to the next level. I am stoked to be part of the O’Neill international team. O’Neill is a company that I know will help me develop and grow with my surfing.”
