Dennis Jarvis, founder of the company, which is the largest of its kind in the SouthBay area, believes Spyder’s customers know the retail chain holds true to it’s slogan “Wedon’t just sell it, we live it” adding the company has sponsored many World Champs andtop professional surfers to maintain a competitive edge.
Jarvis, an ex-pro himself, was privileged enough to grace three covers in his owncareer and rallied that success and notoriety into a multi million dollar business. In agrowing landscape of corporate imitators at the surf retail level, Spyder Surf hasmaintained is position as the flagship core surf retailer through authenticity and constantcommunity support.
Jarvis and O’Reilly credit their 25 years of success to their own passions for thesports, their staff of real knowledgeable surfers, skaters, and snowboarders, theirrelationships within the community and industry, their sponsorship of so many top pro andamateur athletes and the understanding that you’ve got to be authentic. The formula hasled to Spyder Surf Shops winning the Surf Shop of the year award several times and theHermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce even bestowed the prestigious “BeautificationAward” upon the remodeled 8000 sq. ft Pier Ave. location.
In 2007 Jarvis was honored as “Shaper of the year” and just found out he haswon the top spot for the second year in a row, with over 100,000 boards hand shaped hehad this to say about his win. “While most of our competitors in the market areoutsourcing to China, I believe we need to keep quality control and look at our productwith a fine toothed comb” said Jarvis. There has been a quick run of board building in Chinasince the fall of Grubby Clark, of Clark Foam, the “God Father” of the PolyurethaneSurfboard foam manufacturing.
