Update From Saraina Koat Mentawai

Hello everyone,

The 2005 Mentawai surf season is rapidly approaching. Not surprisingly, all of us at Saraina Koat Mentawai are eagerly looking forward to another safe and consistent surf season for all of our guests. If you’re interested in a trip this year now is definitely the time to start planning to ensure that you get the dates you want, on the boat you want, and possibly get the photographer you want. We’ve got a lot to go over so let’s get started:

I. Latest News
First and foremost, SKM would like to extend our sincere condolences to everyone who has been directly or indirectly affected by the devastating tsunami that you have undoubtedly heard about.

Miraculously, the Mentawai Islands and Padang were not impacted by either the magnitude 9.0 earthquake or the tsunami that took a direct hit on many areas in North Sumatra. In the Mentawai Islands the tsunami took the form of unusual tidal activity and from all of our initial reports from our contacts in the islands the water level did not exceed the typical high tide line and the reefs were undamaged.

All of our surf charter trips are on schedule and we are extremely happy at the outpouring of support from everyone who has called and sent us e-mails. We’re currently working alongside SurfAid to coordinate our boats to help in the massive undertaking and aid operation in Nias which has suffered heavy damage and substantial casualties. If you’re a surfer, I really can’t think of a better place to make a donation: http://www.surfaidinternational.org

SKM owner Jordan Heuer on the cover of The Surfer’s Journal: This month’s Surfer’s Journal Magazine cover shot features Saraina Koat Mentawai’s very own Jordan Heuer slotted in an unforgettable Lance’s Right barrel. If you’ve had the opportunity to go on a trip with Jordan on his boat, the Aileoita, you already know how wired he is on a lot of waves over there – this shot is no exception. The photo was taken two seasons ago by the legendary lensman Jeff Divine for an article in Surfer Magazine. If you get a chance pick up a copy and check it out; otherwise you can visit the Surfer’s Journal website and see it in their “Current Issue” section: http://www.surfersjournal.com/html/current_issue.htm. Needless to say, Jordan is stoked to be on the cover of one of his favorite surfing magazines – wouldn’t you be?

The Mikumba helps in the tsunami relief effort: Saraina Koat Mentawai has been working alongside SurfAid and the recently formed Sumatran Surf Zone Relief Organization to help aid the victims of the devastating tsunami that rocked many parts of North Sumatra. Our surf charter boat, the Mikumba, has proved to be an invaluable resource in the relief effort and has delivered almost 50 tons of supplies, doctors, nurses, and volunteers across North Sumatra. We’ve created a special page on our website to let you track the progress of the Sumatran Surf Zone Relief Organization (http://www.mentawaiislands.com/ssro.html) ; if you’d like to get an in depth view of the entire relief operation please visit SurfAid’s website at www.surfaidinternational.org . From now until March 31, 2005 Saraina Koat Mentawai will donate $50 to SurfAid for any customer that books a trip with us this season and $500 for groups of 8.

Wave of Compassion: As most of you know Saraina Koat Mentawai has been one of the most ardent supporters of SurfAid and their efforts over the course of the last few years. We created a very successful event called “Wave of Compassion” which most of you have read about in Surfer Magazine and seen on FUEL TV this past month. The 2004 event was a major success overall and the list of people to thank is endless. If you didn’t get a chance to see the article or t.v. show you can read about it on Surfer Magazine’s website at : http://www.surfermag.com/magazine/archivedissues/wocgoddwill/index.html You can also purchase a copy of the FUEL TV show in your local surf shop by this summer. On a side note: It been an almost surreal experience to watch SurfAid develop from a small grassroots organization into one of the most respected and professional non-profit organizations in the world. They’ve received an immense amount of media coverage and through the outpouring of support from concerned surfers from all over the world and corporate juggernauts Quiksilver, Billabong, Reef, and Rip Curl have helped thousands of peoples lives who were affected and displaced by the recent tsunami. Everyone who has made a donation or put on an event has made a huge impact and we really can’t thank you enough. The surf community has turned the “Waves of Destruction” into a “Wave of Compassion” and we couldn’t be more stoked on everyone’s support and goodwill.

Preparations for the 2005 Wave of Compassion trip are already underway. Organizer Anthony Marcotti says the trip will be held in mid-September to increase the chances of finding good surf. The sweepstakes will start in early May with the winners announced by the end of July. This year’s winners will include one U.S. and one international winner. Guest surf celebrities to be announced. For information on Wave of Compassion go to: www.waveofcompassion.org.

II. Mentawai Islands Surf Report:
The Mentawai Islands are slowly starting to show signs of life again. We’ve had small scale activity during January but certainly nothing like the waves or storms that will start to develop in March and last until October. This time of year is perfect for groups who want the entire Mentawai Islands chain to themselves. Sure, the possibility of getting a double overhead groundswell is small but if you know where to look there is always a head-high wave breaking off somewhere. This season we will do our best to give you accurate reports and photos from specific trips and the plan is to send out a detailed surf report once a month. Stay tuned – last season was pretty average overall; with all the weather anomolies and unusual weather patterns happening across the world we’re optimistic that this season will be one of the best ever and will dish out more barrels than ever.

III. 2005 Schedule and Availability
Here is a complete listing of our remaining trips in 2005. From now until March 31, 2005 Saraina Koat Mentawai will donate $50 for each of our guests who book a trip to SurfAid International; we’ll make a $500 donation for group booking of 8 people. If you and your friends have been planning a trip and would like to make your contribution to help the Mentawai Islands community and the victims of the tsunami and score some insane waves there’s no better time than right now. http://www.mentawaiislands.com/2005scheduleandavailability.html

Surf Spots:

The Mentawai Islands are one of the most consistent surf destinations in the entire world. It’s broad exposure towards the vast, southern Indian Ocean provides these majestic islands with remarkable consistency and quality. During the dry season, late April to early November, the southern hemisphere’s winter, the Indian Ocean is an ultra-active, groundswell producing machine. During this time, surf charters, such as Saraina Koat Mentawai offer the average surfer the opportunity to score the best waves of their lives.

Essentials Checklist:

This list is divided into two categories: In the Water and Out of the Water. It was created to give you ideas and help you keep track of items you may or may not need to bring on your next Mentawai surf adventure. The key rule of thinking is to pack light. The best rule of thumb to follow is to keep your boardbag under 65 lbs so you don’t get red-flagged and have to pay ridiculous baggage fees. The best advice when packing for a surf trip is to pack as light as possible. This fundamental rule of travel is especially true on a surf charter through the Mentawai Islands- when most of your time is spent in the water. If you have additional questions related to packing or traveling throughout the Mentawai Islands please visit our travel information section.

Information about getting an SKM photographer on your trip:

Saraina Koat Mentawai is constantly looking to bring our customers the most up-to-date services possible. Last season we brought in professional surf photographer Dave Collyer from Sickshots to chronicle the entire Mentawai surf season. Dave spent exactly 100 days with ten different groups of surfers; the net result being literally thousands of incredible images and a lot of grateful customers. This year Dave is back with us again but due to increased demand and a lack of supply we’ve added a new addition to the SKM family, Sebastian Imizcoz.
