USA Surf Team Travel Squad Announced For 2014 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship In Ecuador
Surfing America, the National Governing Body for the sport of surfing in the USA, is pleased to announce the final travel squad for the USA Junior Surf Team to compete at the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Junior Surfing Championships in Salinas Ecuador, April 3 – 14, 2014.
The travel squad of 12 was selected from the team of 21 named after the Surfing America USA Championships at Lower Trestles last June. The team consists of 4 Boys Under 18, 4 Boys Under 16, 2 Girls Under 18 and 2 Girls Under 16. It was a difficult decision by coaches Ryan Simmons and Micah Byrne who held several training sessions since June, including intensive camps at Steamer Lane Santa Cruz in January and San Clemente in February. They took into consideration the individual surfers performance in camps, and their results in ASP Pro Junior, Surfing America Prime, NSSA Open competitions and their previous experience at ISA World Junior Championships.
“The travel squad is finalized after an intense 3-day training camp. We surfed Lowers, T-Street and Huntington Beach in preparation for our journey to Ecuador. We built team camaraderie and work ethic, did mental training, and finalized spots with surf-offs. The USA Junior Surf Team is on a mission to win the Gold Medal,” said head coach Ryan Simmons. Assistant Coach Micah Byrne feels that “On paper, our team is the strongest that I can remember, with no weak spots. Their positive energy and camaraderie is like nothing I’ve ever seen before and amazing to be around. If we all perform to the best of our ability we will be unstoppable.”
“For several of our team members, this will be their third trip to ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. 3rd-timers include – Kanoa Igarashi, Jake Davis, Jake Marshall, Griffin Colapinto and Frankie Harrer. Tia Blanco is making her second appearance. The team has seen the magic of teamwork from last year in Nicaragua, keeping everyone motivated and pumped up until the very end of these grueling marathon events. USA placed 5th in 2011, 4th in 2012 and 3rd in 2013. We are hoping to contend for the Gold Medal this year with this experienced, talented, cohesive squad,” said Surfing America executive director, Greg Cruse.
