Video shows pro surfer breaking her ankle

Pro surfer Lakey Peterson broke her ankle in Ventura, California, Wednesday after hitting some major backwash.

The injury has forced her to pull out of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast in a few weeks which, she said, has devastated her.

“I am devastated to say the least but hoping to come back stronger and better than ever,” she wrote in an Instagram post announcing the injury.

Peterson finished the 2015 season ranked 6th in the world.

This is the pro’s first major injury. The wave she was surfing wasn’t all that big but some backwash struck from seemingly out of nowhere and tossed her off the wave.

She seems to have a sense of humor about the whole thing, tagging @KookoftheDay in the post.

Peterson is a Santa Barbara native. She isn’t sure how long the recovery process will be but wanted to wait until speaking with doctors before officially pulling out of the contest.
