SURFER'S 2011 Oakley Surf Shop Challenge got a late start on Friday due to tsunami warnings. But when the gates finally opened at Seaside Reef's unusually empty and eerily foggy parking lot, the bar was immediately set high for the entire day. In consistent, shoulder to head-high surf, 13 local San Diego teams vied for bragging rights, but in the end it was the reining champs from Hansen's who once again took home the title.
Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
