East vs. West Coast Surfing -US Military Surf Contest

Camp Pendleton may be home to thousands of Marines but at Red Bull Rivals at Del Mar Beach, there was a lighter mood to the famed base's proceedings. While hundreds of Marines and their families looked on, 20 surfers took to the restricted base waters to compete. The surf event played off the East Coast / West Coast rivalry that exists between Marines trained at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) on the West Coast and Marines trained at Paris Island on the East Coast. "Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
