Kelly Slater won his 6th Pipe Masters on the North Shore last week in classic Hawaiian Surf! In his semi-final heat, Kelly managed to do something he's never done before which isn't much, trailing the entire heat he needed two giant waves to get back into it. Any other surfer would have just paddled in and conceded the heat, but not Kelly. He scored a 9.1 wave, and a 10.0 wave in less than 2 minutes, giving him a 19.1 out of 20 to win his heat. Only Kelly Slater could manage to pull off a miracle like this.
Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
