We really didn’t know what to expect when we scheduled “The Bushfish Surf Series” event for the Lone Star State. What were we getting ourselves into? Do people really surf in Texas?
It wasn’t until George W., George SR., and Bill Clinton, stepped out of thier Texas truck that we had realized there were 100+ people waiting in the parking lot for the event to get up and running. The surf was shoulder-high with some head high sets and the weather was gloomy in the morning but the sun came out by mid-morning, and hell there was surf in Texas! The kid’s response to the entire day of festivities was unbelievable. Red Bull even drove up a mobile BBQ pit from Austin, for some good ol’ Texas cookin.
The Groms wasted no time getting in the water! They free surfed when they didnt have heats. When they did have a heat it was on. Malibu Shannon looked like a favorite to win but came up short. The Grom battle came down to justin Thompson, and Nathan Ford. It was Nathan Ford who would take the win by a half a point.
Juniors are like a pack of pit bulls ready for a fight and when it comes down to it they go. Corbin Bass edged out Forrest Scroggs for the win! Luke Bridges, Jarret Frazier, Micah Steph, Andrew Duge, finished in that order.
Girls in Texas would surprize you it seems like they raised a little different in Texas. They are not your tipacle she-man surf diva. They are girls that surf and they like to throw down Texas style. It went down like this! Standout sisters Nicole and Danielle Dodson, they both fought for the first place finish but it would be 16 year old Nicole Dodson edging out her younger sister for the win. Following in third, fourth, fifth, six, was Morgan Tichwell, Victoria Franke, Tiffany James, and Molly Ware.
The Pro-Am would be the highlight of the day due to the fact that whoever wins gets all the braging rights, but has buy the beer for all his boys, and in Texas everyone is your boy. Tristan Richards, Robbie Jones, CJ Bradshaw, Zach May, Justin Jalufka, and Kris Hopkins, would all battle it out for the first place prizes and $200 cash. In the end it would be Zach May edging out Tristan Richards for the win!
