The second event of the Butterfish Surf Series was held at Tar Pits inCarpinteria on November 15, 2003. The surf was really small and the weatherwas grey. Tar Pits is cool place to hang out, and with over 96 competitorsshowing up to compete for tons of prizes, some much needed VQS points, andwith free breakfast provided by Red Bull, the show must go on.
In the Grom division, the useually dominant Cory Arrambedie has had a runfor his money this season, with a super improved Matt McCabe from Ventura.Matt won the previous Butterfish held at Mandalay and was still on a rollfrom his win. McCabe started strong and surfed well looking comfortable andsurfing fast in the very small surf. It was Cory’s determination andseasoned competitive skills that would land him the win, with Matt McCabefollowing in second. The final rounded out with Spencer Regan, DustinWillman, Cheyne Gusmori, and Matt Johnson, finishing in that order.
In the Junior divison it is anybody’s game with a slough of talent battlingit out for points and prizes. Colin Schlidhauer would edge out useualfavorites Brian Schmidt, and Timmy “the tooth” Pfannestiel for the win.Colin walked away with a Ride Snowboard, a bag of prizes, and 1000 pointsfor his efforts.
In the Pro-Am division cash and prizes are on the line. Blake Howard, andDennis Rizzo, battled it out for the $200 bucks and prizes. Howey wouldcreep his way into first place, with Rizzo closely behind, Bummy Koepenick,Ian O’neill, Marcelo Araujo, and Vince Perry, would round out the final.
