The first ever VOLCOM STARFISH event held at Avoca beach on the weekend 2nd December was a great day had by all involved. The day provided a pumping fresh solid 4-foot southerly swell with a strong off shore breeze, creating quality rights running down Avoca Beach. Both junior and open division competitors revelled in the solid conditions. Once again junior Gold Coast surfer Josh Kerr was a stand out, sending the crowd into an up roar with an amazing display of Ariel surfing scoring the only 10 point ride of the event. Other Stand out Manly’s Bill Langley surfed well throughout the event to place 2nd behind an in form Sam Page also from Manly, Josh Kerr placed 3rd and Evan Faulks of Maroubra placed 4th.
[IMAGE 1]Open division was an open field with all competitors thoroughly enjoying the solid barrelling conditions. New Zealand Surfer and Volcom team rider, Jay Quinn who is in Australia to compete on the Australian junior circuit in 2001, at only 17 he was a standout showing that he will definitely be a surfer to watch in Australia this coming year. But it was Jarrod Morrell who took out a great final ahead of Mid north coast surfer Mick O”Rafferty who placed 2nd, local surfer Jesse Tait placed 3rd, Steve Clements fresh from just missing out on qualifying for a spot on WCT, placed 4th.
The day was a great success for all competitors and non competitors, once again there were loads of givaways for the kids, they didn’t come with out challenging the rest of the kids eager to get there hands on the goodies FUN FUN FUN.

Volcom international Ariel superstar Oscar Wright was surfing with the kids for hours before signing posters and groms surfboards.

This weekend #2 event on the VQS series will be held at Elourea Beach, Cronulla 9th December, action starts from 7am, and don’t forget the FI-GNARLY at Nth Steyne Manly Beach on 16th December.
