Good times at the Goldfish! The second stop of the Goldfish Surf Series took place in Cayucos, Saturday October 22nd, at 24th St. in fridged cold temperatures. Good thing for the overcast skies, because it kept it glassy conditions all day for some fun 2-3 ft surf. To keep warm, the kids ran crazy all day, rolling in kelp, carving pumpkins and beating on each other for free stuff. Here’s the lowdown from the finals.
In the Grom Final, it was a battle of hooded Kids! I think 4 out of the 6 finalists had hooded wetsuits on. Their moms must have told them to bundle up if they wanted to come out and play. Anyways, Shaun Organista put on a good show all day and looked to be the up and coming favorite in the final. However, he came up short to Christian Ramirez, who has slowly been climbing the latter in each contest. It was Christian’s first win and boy was he stoked. He ran off with a Zoo York skatedeck, custom Volcom mask trophy and a backpack full of other goodies. Rounding out the final was, Shaun Organista, Joe Ball, Tim Smith, Ben Giggy, and Colin Duncan.
The girls were all time. Jamie Hannula, Hayley Cameron and Amy Covert all showed to the event, wearing custom tee shirts that said “Central Coast Surf Diva Posse on the front, with the numbers 1,2, and 3 printed on the back, with their last names above it. They all put on a great performance in the water, but Diana Mattison didn’t let the surf diva posse psyche her out, she blazed her way to her second consecutive win this season. She loaded down her car with a heap of prizes, which included a Secotor 9 skatedeck and a pair of Emu boots. Jamie Hannula, Hayley Cameron, Meredith Lockwood, Amy Covert, and Deanna Reed rounded out the final.
In the Juniors final it came down to a couple young Goldfish rivalries Colin Anderson and Timmy Pfannestiel. Colin was hungry for the win after making multiple finals this season already, but he feel victim to Timmy’s small wave surfing skills. Timmy took the win along with some great prizes including a Santa Cruz skatedeck and Vestal watch. Rounding out the final was Colin Anderson, John Weber, Brandon Barnes, Tommy Plastino and Miles Belick.
The Pro-AM final was good mix of the new school and old. Some long time Goldfish competitors, Walt Cerney, Danny Hart and Jay Bigham made a good showing in the final, but it was Nate Tyler who favored to sit by himself down the beach, and pick of some long rippable left handers. Nate walked away with the win, $500 cash and a grip of prizes. Geovani Cervantez, Jay Bigham, Dennis Rizzo, Walter Cerney and Danny Hart rounded out the final.
