Wow, another year has flown by and we find ourselves stepping off the plane on to Texas soil again for the fourth consecutive Bushfish Surf Series. Expect this year would be different, instead of heading out onto I-37 to Corpus Christi, we had our eyes set on I-45 to Galveston. We packed up the truck and set the cruise control with word that the kids from Galveston were ready and waiting of us.
We had two days waiting period to get the contest done, but waves or no waves were going to have boot stomping of a party Saturday night. A cold front was forecasted to blow through Galveston late Saturday night, which would cause wind swell for Saturday afternoon and then winds to turn off shore and blow the surf dead flat Sunday. So Saturday was our only window of opportunity to hold it.
We let the kids make the call. As the locals had forecasted the 1 ft. surf in the morning turned into some 2 footers throughout the crazy day of wind, Mud fights, and tarenchal downpours. Amazingly the event finished off with sunny skies and great weather. Here are some highlights from the contest and the crazy after party.
The kids of Texas are always fired up to surf, eat, drink, and mess up anything and everything that comes their way. The twenty-minute Grom final saw Daniel Norton destroy two waves in row and post some impressive scores early on. But like the night stalker, Cody Canzoner quickly slashed his way back. Daniel would fall victim and take a respectable second place for the second year in a row and swear he would be back for revenge next year as he disappeared into the night. Cody claimed the victory along with $250 cash, a remote control plane and two arms full of goods. Rounding out the final was Ian Simmons and Shane Lawson.
You think the groms in Texas are crazy, you should see the girls after a day for shot gunning Monster energy drinks. Andrea Fogel, Daniel Dodson, Jordan Isabell and Farah Cox managed to burn some of their energy in the girls final. Danielle flew all the way back from Hawaii to hang out for the contest, see some old friends and family. She would finish in third with Andrea Fogel in a close second to Jordan Isabell who earned the win, $250 cash, a Vestal watch and a truck load full of other goods.
The Juniors finalist were ready to blow up like a packet of ketchup under your moms back tire. They hit the water for twenty minutes of high performance surfing. After the horn sounded and the kicking, screaming, and splashing ended, Brandon Stevens found himself in the winner,s circle holding onto a brand new Santa Cruz Surfboard, H20 Waterproof ipod housing and a bag full of other amazing prizes. Rounding out the final was Ian Simmons, Cody Jones, and Brad Crockett.
In the Pro-Am final a cool $500 cash prize was at stake between the four finalists. It was a back and forth exchange for the lead with a half a point separating first through third place. President George W. Bush made a special appearance for the final award ceremony to shake everyone’s hand give out the $500 bucks cash and custom over sized check away to the winner Gabe Posmack. Rounding out the final was Lee Hughes, Chris Longbaugh and Justin Jalufka.

After a great day of waves, beach mayhem and way to much B-B-Q everyone made there way over DeElegence nightclub for the all ages after party. With some local help from Ohana Surf and Skate we turned their Local club into a smashing after party with plenty of monster energy drinks for the groms and free flowing beer for the older crew.
A local upstart band from Galveston called A COUNTRY BURIAL opened up the night with a hardcore metal sound and blew the frigin roof off of the place. They were followed by Austin rockers LEAVING JULY, and a entertaining CRASH GALLERY from Austin finished off the night. The kids moshed, ripped posters off the wall and grabbed plenty of free stuff, as everyone drank to a great day.
Special thanks to Boog and Mike of Ohana Surf and Skate, TGSA, DeElegence Nightclub, Tom Collins, and JR and his big old barbeque pit.
