Once again the Butterfish Surf Series went off at Pipes in Ventura for the fourth and final event of the season. The massive amount of rain this year caused an over abundance of sand to build up at the Point in Ventura allowing some super bank style waves to go off for the contestant on Saturday March 5th, 2005. We showed up on Sunday after the event to get a session in for ourselves and the sandbar was gone? Mother Nature is cruel. Over 100 competitors showed up to compete on a very sunny day in 3-5ft. dredging right handers.
In the Grom Final the kids were psyched for the 20-minute final. From the beginning, Santa Cruz’s Nat Young and Pier Pont local Dustin Willman switched off leading the final, but when the horn sounded, it was Dustin’s local knowledge that payed off and earned him the victory, taking home a new Hotline wetsuit, backpack full of gear and custom framed trophy. Rounding out the final was Shaun Organista, Josh Printup, Cheyne Gusteroli, and Daniel Craft.
The Juniors final was another action packed heat with Tyler Molesworth, Evan Mendelson and Colin Anderson jocking for the win, and the 2000 points at stake for first place. With a grip load of prizes and overall season title on the line there was no holding back. In the closing minutes of the final Colin ripped a long right hander all the way through the inside and earned himself the win. He walked away with a Santa Cruz skatedeck, Spy shades and bag full of gear. Tyler Molesworth finished in second, with Evan Mendelson, Tim Pfannestiel, Matt McCabe, and Charlie Stevens rounding out the final.
The Girls were ripping! They definitely stepped it up in the highly contestable waves. In the final it came down to some heated exchanges between Jenny Quam, and Sage Erickson. But Sage sealed the deal with 7.5 in closing minutes to take the victory. She won a Sector 9 skatedeck, a Vestal watch, and bag full of gear. Rounding out the final was Linsey Brown, Jenna Thompson, Natalie Rozsa, and Christina Beninati.
The Pro-Am had 30 minutes to battle for $500 Cash, and the bragging rights, plus a huge amount of prizes. It’s not often that you get to surf a heat with conditions this good, these guys were pissed and they mean’t business. Everyone was taking advantage of long pealing waves of Pipes and it showed with plenty of scores over 9 being handed out by the judges. In the end it came down to Brian Aresco, and Blake Howard for win, in the closest heat of the season, with Blake barely edging out Brian for the win. Bart Templeman, Nate Tyler, Pete Mussio, and Aaron Ernest rounded out the final.
