I love New York! I’ve been to NY a couple times in the past few years and had more fun running wild in NYC than anything else. This year was just a bit different. I flew into NJ on Thursday, strait into one of the worst storms to hit the northeast in resent years. The wind was 30 — 40 mph onshore and I don’t think the rain stopped until a couple hours before the event was set to run on Saturday morning. We got to the beach and found ourselves looking at near perfect 6 to 8 foot spitting tubes off the Lincoln Blvd. Jetty. The winds had switched offshore, myself, Granger and 60 competitors were foaming at the gills to get in the water. So we set up shop and got the contest going, here is how everything ended up.
The Groms were going off all day in and out of the water. We had too much fun making them beat each other up all day for free goodies. However, the Grom to beat in the water was Balaram Stack. He just came off a fresh win at the Jellyfish in NC and was hungry to add another Giant RC Car to his growing collection. The past couple of events Volcom has been giving these giant RC cars to the Groms winner. Balaram now has two of them after taking the Groms title in the NY event. Close on his heels was another local standout and an all around good little kid, Rich Breen. Falling in the third spot was Brian Pollak. Good job to all the groms for taking a couple on the head and turning heads at the same time.
The Juniors Division was action packed like a Chuck Norris or a Rambo movie. The kids were paddle battle kings, cutting each other off and splashing water all around like savages. Local stand out TJ Guimelia couldn’t put it together in the final only getting one wave. So with that, it opened up a quick opportunity for the other 5 kids to do some damage. Chris Jones got a couple good ones and walked away with the win, a Flatline Skatedeck and a handmade Push Light trophy to put on his wall. Taking a respectable second was Luke Hamilton.
The Pro-Am Division was great! This was a very entertaining final with everyone getting their fare share of sick pits in the 20 minute heat. Coming out on top with $500 cash and the win was local guy Dave Juan. Dave looked like he was having a damn good time and it payed off too. Taking the runner up spot was Red Hannman. Everyone walked away with tons of product and smiles all around.
Thanks to all of the groms for keeping us entertained all day and we will see you all next year. Lets just hope the wave show up again…Daniel Terry
