The second stop of the Starfish Surf Series went off at 9th St. Huntington Beach on Saturday August 27th. The sun was blazing, the water was red, and the waves were fun 2 to 4 ft. Again there was a huge turn out in Huntington Beach, with every division full to the brim, totaling a 166 competitors. Just another 12 hours of competition at The Starfish Surf Series. It was dead high tide for the finals, which made for some really big explosive maneuvers to the beach. Here’s how the finals unfolded.
The Girls final was a battle of the Jens. Jenny Quam and Jenna Balester both posted some high scores on their opening waves, but it was Jenny Quam who followed up her first wave with a second high score, earning her the victory. She collected a Volcom backpack of goods, including a pair of pink Emu boots and a custom trophy. Rounding out the final was Jenna Balester, Sara Taylor, Tanita Sprette, Cecelia Enriquez, and Amy Han.
The Groms were ripping all day and the final wasn’t any different. Micro man Luke Davis and Riley Metcalf laid down some impressive turns in the final, but it was Laguna Beach ripper Eli Vizsolay who stayed down the beach, away from the pack and picked of a couple of good long lefts. He took the win, a sector9 skate deck, and a bag of goodies. Luke Davis, Riley Metcalf, Evan Kane, Jordan Zosak, and JD MacFadden rounded out the final.
The new batch of juniors were ruling. Last year they were ripping the grom division and now the Junior divsion is no different. Brent Reilly and Kyle Kennelly was taking the older kids down all day. Little Brent had the highest scored wave in the final an 8.5 but couldn’t find another to seal the win. Jason Harris had a really good final as well with a strong first score. After bodysurfing in the shore pond all day, Kyle Kennelly mustard up some energy for the final and was victorious, earning a Santa Cruz skate deck, a vestal watch, and the first Place trophy. Rounding out the final was Jason Harris, Brent Reilly, Marty Weinstein, Keetin Devine and Chad Underhill.
It was Josh Hoyer and Chris Schiarone and Josh Buran who had the $500 in sight, in the Pro-Am Final. Hoyer had some good long waves but couldn’t pick the better shaped ones. Josh Buran had a couple of good layback turnswhich propelled him into the cash prize, vestal watch, Sector9 skate deck and the first place trophy. Chris Schiarone, Josh Hoyer, Russell Fawley, Dom Spinardi and Chris Broman rounded out the final.
Thanks to all the competitors and parents who showed up and braved the heat all day.
