It’s been three years since the VQS had made a stop in the southern part of North Carolina and that will never happen again cause we will be back. As luck would have it we scored some fun surf on Sunday after calling off the event on Saturday due to small surf and Granger,s hangover. After a super fun day of running around Wrightsville we got down to business on Sunday and signed in just under 120 kids.

The weather wasn,t the best and the waves didn,t offer much but when you have a a bunch of cool kids, a bag full of shaving cream, sardines, clam juice, cream of asparagus soup and a bunch of Monster Energy drinks the day turns into something to remember. With that said here is a little ditty about our day in the rain.

Lets start with the future, the Future of surfing in southern North Carolina that is. The Groms came out firing and hitting the target dead center was young Dylan Konaski. Dylan battled his way through the likes of another young standout Mr. Evan Barton. Evan came close but taking home the General Lee and a bag full of loot was Konaski. Taking the third spot was Sterling King. All of our Grom Finalist surfed great all day and we hope to see you guys at the VQS Champs in May of 2007.

In the juniors division we had a Battle of epic whatever. I say whatever cause sometimes I can’t think of cool or funny things to say. Anyways, Winning the Juniors Division and taking home a small-motorized General Lee remote Controlled orange car with the rebel flag on the roof was Jonathan Mincher. It was no easy task to win this one because right on his junior sized heels was our second place finisher Ben Powell. Ben has super curly hair and that stopped him from winning, I think. Stepping into the third spot was none other that John Savard. Good Job kids!!!

The ladies stepped into this one like a pack of super models on the way to a buffet after being fired from their super model jobs. I guess what I’m saying is that they were full of energy and surfed well enough to keep our Judges highly entertained. The Most entertaining lady of them all was a young woman by the name of Leilani Pickett. Leilani took out a stacked heat of competition including our second place finisher Kayleigh Winslow and our third place finisher Heather McRay. Ladies, thanks for being a part of the 2006 Cooterfish, see you at the Champs!!!

The Pro-Am division was stacked like Dolly Parton. That’s a big claim but it’s true! Six very talented surfers did what they could in the small surf and they managed to actually put on quite a show. The surfer taking home the cash and a custom Cooterfish trophy and a bunch of prizes was Jeff Myers. Coming in a close second was Richard Gilligan and rounding off the third spot was Richards brother Matt Gilligan. Another great event guys, See you all at the bar? I mean the VQS Champs.

Big Thanks to Ryan Curtis for the Surf Photos!!!!
