What a wild weekend it’s been folks. The only reason I say this is because we ran two events in one weekend. The good part is that we scored good waves for both events! The swell had dropped from a solid 6 feet to about 3 feet overnight due to 30 mph offshore winds but the waves held up all day and we were able to finish the event in small but fun little waves. Waves or no waves we had a great day trying to keep our tents from flying away and watching a slough of local groms run wild for prizes. Here is how the day went down.
The Groms division was action packed! Balaram Stack showed up from NY looking for a third VQS win in a row and took top honors. Coming in second with a couple good waves of his own was local ripper Jordan Beverly. I’ve watched some of the groms in NJ for the past couple of years and I’m stoked to say that there is a good crop of kids coming out of the garden state. Look for big things from these kids, they are going to be the ones to beat in the near future.
The Juniors divison had a couple good sets come it during the final and the kids took full advantage of the tiny surf. Jon Von Suskill put up a damn good fight in the final but was taken out by Zach Humpries in the last five Minutes of the heat. Nick Menditto rounded out the third spot while Tom Petricken took 4th. Thanks to all of the Juniors for showing up early and keeping moral high throughout the day. You guys freaking rule.
The ladies, The ladies, the ladies. You were all ripping! With that said I’m stoked that we are going to be able to have some of you attend the VQS Champs next year. Congrats to the winner Brittany Gomulka for stomping on her friends and taking home a very large bag of goods. Coming in second was Kim Kepich and taking the third spot was Jessica Swenson. Good job girls! We will see all of you next year!! Hope you all had a good time!
Alright, the Pro-Am, I’m gonna say that the Jersey guys are more intense than anyone on the east coast. If they lose they get pissed, if they win they rub it in the rest of the guys faces. It’s great! Sam Hammer was hanging out on the beach w/ a bum leg for a good part of the day, he couldn’t surf but he was still talking trash. That’s how it is in Jersey. With that said, here is how everything landed into place. The final was pretty much as close to a four way tie as I’ve ever seen it. This final was good, everyone one of these guys were ripping the shit out of these small little rights. Taking top honors after a tie breaker and winning by half a point was Mr. Ryan Daly. Ryan beat out a group of close friends and took home $500.00 in cash and a butt load of prizes. Taking the runner up trophy was Drew McCoy and sitting in third was Juniors winner Zach Humphries.
Thanks to everyone in Jersey for staying positive and having a good time. For those who didn’t have a good time, I’m sorry. Maybe you should try rollerblading.
