Vote Greg Long As National Geographic Adventurer Of The Year
After a near drowning at Cortes Bank, Greg Long thought about throwing in the towel. “As I was dangling from the basket of the Coast Guard helicopter, being lifted from the middle of the ocean in huge seas after basically drowning, I said to myself, ‘There’s no way. I’m done. Thank you for this second chance at life. I don’t need big-wave surfing anymore,'” he told National Geographic.
A three wave hold down will do that to a guy.
But less than a year later, Long found himself on the winners podium after winning the 2012/2013 Big Wave World Tour. How did he get back on the proverbial horse? Lots of hard work, training, and thinking about the art—and dangers—of riding big waves. “I’m at a place where I just respect the process,” he says. “I’ll find my way to where I’m meant to be in the big-wave surfing world,” added Long. It’s for this extraordinary comeback that Greg has been nominated for National Geographic’s “Adventurer Of The Year.” While that’s a huge honor, the surf community now has the opportunity to vote Greg as the “People’s Choice Adventurer of the Year.” Every day until January 31 you can vote, do so at adventure.nationalgeographic.com/vote.
