Waiting For Waves At The Rip Curl Malibu Pro

RIP CURL PRO MALIBU (1 October – 9 October)

Waiting For Waves At The Rip Curl Malibu Pro

Proceedings for the second annual Rip Curl Malibu Pro, and more specifically the Rip Curl Footwear Trials that were expected to run today, have once again been put on hold. Small, inconsistent conditions at Malibu’s Leo Carillo beach this morning and a more promising swell forecast for tomorrow and the rest of the weekend, have persuaded contest officials to reformat the trials and run them in conjunction with the main event at Malibu’s Surfrider beach tomorrow.

While the trialists will no longer surf a full Round Robin format, they will enjoy better conditions when they do paddle out. The first heat of the Rip Curl Footwear Trials will run at 7:30 am. Round one of the main event will immediately follow the awarding of the event wildcard to the trialist taking top honors.

The nine-day contest window, of which only two days are needed to run the event in its entirety, affords officials the luxury of putting the girls out in the best conditions available. As the Rip Curl Malibu Pro is also a mobile event, officials can scour neighboring breaks for waves as well. Though all of these variables make for a more complicated contest, the skill and savvy of these world class athletes is best demonstrated in world class conditions and companies like Rip Curl have made that commitment to the women of the World Championship Tour (WCT) and trialists alike.

Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for two to three foot (one meter) waves in the morning that could morph into chest high plus conditions later in the day. The swell pattern for Saturday is even stronger.

If you’re fortunate enough to make your way down to Malibu tomorrow, do so early. And for those of you unable to make it down to the beach, make sure you find a front row seat for the webcast at www.ripcurl.com/malibu and www.aspworldtour.com!
