This past weekend, the surf industry gathered in Dana Point, California with one common goal—protecting and preserving our oceans. CEO's and industry big wigs put down the spreadsheets, turned off the Blackberry's, and well, partied for a good cause. After all the paintings, signed surfboards, and overpriced drinks were paid for, the SIMA Environmental Fund had raised over $400,000.
Tom Curren was honored as Waterman Of The Year, Robert F. Kennedy was named Environmentalist Of The Year, and Al Merrick was presented with the SIMA Lifetime Achievement Award.
Held at the Ritz Carlton and nearby Monarch Beach Golf Course, the event is unique in that the surf industry, which is led by SIMA, is the only industry that sets aside it's competitive interests to look out for a common cause, the beautiful oceans that have given us all so much.—Carl Steindler
