(Werri Beach, NSW – Sunday 12, October 2008): Jordi Watson (Currarong, NSW)
came, saw and conquered today at the Zink Surf South Coast Open, taking home
the title and the Hurley NSW Championship Circuit ratings lead.
In a performance that saw him advance through the entire competition without
losing a single heat, Watson was in a league of his own dominating the
“I was really focused on a win here today,” Watson said.
With the best 16 & under surfers in the state converging on Werri Beach,
they were treated to super fun, one metre peaks.
Watson, who had was in devastating form throughout the final defeated former
Hurley NSWCC ratings leader Oscar Scanes (Old Bar), the stylish Connor
O’Leary (Cronulla) and Jack Scollard (Lake Munmorah), who finished second,
third and fourth respectively.
“I have made a few finals during the series, but my win rate hasn’t been
very good, so I was super keen to make sure I took it out,” Watson added.
“Plus being here on the south coast, I was even more motivated to win.”
The lead changed multiple times in the early stages of the final with Scanes
and O’Leary each setting the standard with fluent surfing.
But in the end it was the powerful approach of Watson that saw O’Leary loose
his grip on the final.
Watson secured a strong lead when he backed up his early 6.0 with a 5.07 and
then with 4 minutes remaining and with the door still open for both O’Leary
and Scanes for victory, Watson unleashed his vicious forehand attack on a
set wave with three solid gouges to seal the win.
“Wave selection was really important today, so I made sure I took the medium
sized waves with better scoring potential.”
Watson’s win moves him now into the lead on the Hurley NSWCC ratings where
he is now 390 points clear of Scanes. O’Leary has moved into third after his
second placing, with Ryan Callinan (Merewether) dropping back to fourth and
Jack Scollard (Lake Munmorah) in fifth.
“I’m stoked to have moved into the lead on the ratings and I’m now focusing
on the next event to ensure I get strong result to finish ahead of Oscar
