What do you get when you mix the best surfers in the world, at the best waves in the world, but in the worst conditions for those waves? The ASP world tour of late. The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast got under way Saturday at a “sub-pah” Daranbah. It was set to go down at Snapper Rocks, but the event has the option to go mobile and did.
All you had to do is watch Andy Irons’ heat to understand how bad the waves were. His body language and lack of an effort made it perfectly clear how he felt about the conditions, as well as what round he was going to surf in next. His brother Bruce fared better, he actually tried, and punted his way into Round 3.
Standouts from Round 1 include: Taj Burrow, Bede Durbidge, Luke Munro and Dayyan Neve. Two names worth mentioning are tour rookie, Dane Reynolds, who scored a 16.20 and Adrian Buchan , who scored a 16.10, both would have won just about any other heat, but had the ill fortune of surfing against the previously mentioned Burrow and Munro.
