Congratulations on making it to the 2010 WSA Gatorade Championship Tour Hoppy Swarts Memorial West Coast Championships! We have a great weekend planned and it looks like Mother Nature is cooperating as well. Surfline and Magic Seaweed are both calling for a new southern hemisphere swell in the shoulder to head high range with head high plus on the sets on Saturday and holding through Sunday. The weather should be warm and sunny except for the possibility of a Catalina Eddy forming that may cause overcast skies in the morning with South winds clearing in the afternoon. South swell is perfect for Church because it will give us a North and South peak for our double areas.
We have a full cast of mostly ASP certified judges along with 4 person heats and computer scoring! Finals will be 20 minutes. Nalu’s Island Grill will be there on Saturday with their kine island grinds for lunch and shave ice in the afternoon! The Kicker BBQ team will be smoking Tri-Tip for sandwiches on Sunday and Longboards Ice Cream will be on hand in the afternoon with dessert! Gidget Worldwide will be cooking up the pancakes both mornings and of course we will have all of the cold delicious Gatorade you can drink! Gatorade also has t-shirts and beach towels to give out as prizes. TransWorld Surf has also provided some goodies to give away during the event. Plus all competitors get a killer custom contest t-shirt and a Flexcomb flexible waxcomb!
At stake are West Coast Champion Titles for each division based on the top 7 regular season events scores plus your West Coast Championship scores. Surf Coach USA will be awarding the “Midget Smith Memorial Sportsmanship Award” that includes a week at Surf Coach USA Training Camp! Kicker will be supplying their amazing headphones, earbuds and iPod Docking Stereos to High Wave Scores. Boys U14, U16, U18 and Girls U14, U16 and U18 are competing for slots in the Surfing America Prime series next season and other divisions are competing for slots in the Surfing America USA Championships in June at the Huntington Beach Pier and Lower Trestles!
Gatorade will also be awarding The Gatorade “Go All Day Award”
“Surfing doesn’t really have a start and a finish, its part of your life, all day every day. It’s about going out with your friends, having fun, supporting each other and progressing. It’s about dawn patrol and evening sessions and everything in between – not just about 1st place or best trick.
We’ll be looking for the guy or gal who surfed hard all day, had fun and made an impact on the event and everyone watching it. The winner of the Gatorade All Day Award will earn a sweet trophy and a year’s supply of Gatorade.”
Parking is at the State Parks special events lot. Cost is $15 a day and they do not accept State Park Parking Passes. The Ocean Minded Shuttle Bus will run from the top of the lot down to the competition area all day. Free parking is available along Christianitos Road and the Trestles Lot will take Beach Passes, but parking will be hard to come by due to the South swell forecast for the weekend. The shuttle bus will not pick-up at the Trestles “Carl’s Jr.” lot. Do not cross the train tracks and do not go down the sandstone cliffs. Also please don’t trample the vegetation. Ocean Minded and Litter Critters will be hosting beach clean-ups both days. Sticky Bumps will be hosting their DayGlo Wax Art Contest with all kinds of great prizes to the winners. Sheri from Seasister.com will be capturing all the action with her great photographs!
