|Winner of the Xcel Pro Showdown At Supers will win an entry into the Von Zipper Trials
The perfect waves of Supertubes are once again set to host the speciality surfing event – the Xcel Pro Showdown At Supertubes. After an amazing first year in 2009, Xcel are set to eclipse the inaugural event this year with a new website and a new format. The 2010 version of the Xcel Pro also has a new media partner in Zigzag Magazine.
The waiting period for the event is the entire month of May, with just one day needed to run the event to completion. May is a good month for Supertubes, and solid swell combined with offshore winds is not uncommon. Last year the contest was blessed with one of the best days of the year, and incredibly long barrel rides were the order of the day.
The Xcel Pro is an invite-only* event, with a selection of Supertubes specialists and locals invited to compete in the event. These surfers are from all walks of life, and are not your typical professional surfer. They are Jeffrey’s Bay and nearby environs citizens who dedicate their lives to surfing Supers whenever they can, and in so doing have proven their skills in threading the perfect barrels of Supers.
“We have quite a hard act to follow after last year’s waves and performances by the invited surfers,” said Xcel’s Koffie Jacobs. “I’m confident that Supers will deliver another epic day for the surfers to show their stuff. Supers does bring out the best in these guys, and it is a real treat to watch them pushing it to the next level. A wild-card into the Von Zipper trials is a massive incentive for these local guys as well, as it can lead all the way into the main event, and any one of these guys has a good chance of beating the top pros at Supers.”
The winner of the Xcel Pro Showdown At Supers will win an entry into the Von Zipper Trials for the Billabong Pro World Tour event set to run at Supertubes in late July, a R5000 Nixon Watch, as well as R5000 cash. Ryan Payne won the first Xcel Pro last year.
“I can’t wait for this year’s edition of the Xcel Pro,” said a pumped up Ryan. “What can be better than yourself and three mates out at the best pointbreak in the world?” Ryan had a tough battle last year against Warren Dean, but one tube ride in particular secured him the win from veteran Supers local and hardened competitor Dean.
“We’re all winners at the end of the day, but making it two in a row would be unreal,” said Payne of his goals for this year’s event. “I feel really fit at the moment and have four new boards on the way, so I am chomping at the bit for the next swell.”
The event will be filmed by Silver Bullet productions. Energy will be supplied by Red Bull. DaKine, Billabong, Nixon, Sector 9, Von Zipper and Kustom are co-sponsors, and JBU will be in charge of the water patrol. The media partner is Zigzag Magazine, who will be hosting an online event portal.
