2013 International Surfing Day: How Are You Getting Involved?

Ah, the official first day of summer is nearly upon us. For surf retailers, we hope that means an influx of groms hitting the shop to get their surfboards dialed in for the next few months, and there’s no better way to support that local stoke than creating an event, promotion, social media campaign, or some other grassroots effort around International Surfing Day.

Now in its ninth year, International Surfing Day (ISD) continues to unite surfers around the world to celebrate the sport of surfing, while raising awareness and showing appreciation for our coastal environments. On the retail side, SurfRide is partnering up with Channel Islands and TransWorld SURF to host a demo day at Buccaneer Beach in Oceanside—a perfect way to raise awareness around ISD, the shop and it’s location, and provide surfers a chance to try out new boards and get stoked.

“What better way to break up your work week than to sneak out and go surf!” says Surf Ride on its blog. “Whether you have to dawn patrol it, surf after work, or sneak out all day; go surfing. CI will have their demo truck, with tons of boards to try. Don’t miss it.”

Globe partnered up with the Surfrider Foundation this year as well, and will host a beach clean up and surf session at Hermosa Beach Pier. The event boasts free breakfast and a chance to win a prize pack for those who head out to the beach to participate.  The party starts at 7 a.m.

“Part of the beauty of International Surfing Day is that people everywhere can celebrate and give back,” said Surfrider Foundation Director of Marketing & Communications Laura Lee. “Whether that’s paddling out for the very first time, sneaking in a quick session with friends, or picking up trash at your local beach, ISD is as big as you make it.”

The history of surfing and the characters that shaped it are diverse. The sport  has grown from a relatively underground cult following to a billion-dollar industry. ISD, which was founded officially in 2005 with a smattering of local surfers congregating at their breaks across the United States, and has since expanded to more than 200 events in 30 countries worldwide, according to the Surfrider Foundation. That’s some impressive growth!
