By The Numbers: 2011 Winter Trade Show Wrap Up

While the snow may have been meager lately in Europe, attendance at ispo definitely was not. With over 80,000 attendees, the Munich show was a huge grand finale for an epic trade show season that saw growth at all of the shows. Here’s a quick look at the attendance stats for the season,  the records that were broken, and insight on what that means for the industry.

What was the biggest highlight of your January show for you?

I think the All Star Jam, hosted by Jeremy Jones, and everything tied to “OR Rocks!”

My hotspots for the January 2011 show included the Florida Surfboard Shape off, which was on display on the top of the main aisle in our newly designed shaping bay. It was awesome to see some of the best shapers mow foam there on the show floor in a really eye-catching way. I was also thrilled with the $15,000 Bangers for Bucks shop contest. The roster of shop teams were incredible–the current crop of pros should definitely be looking over their shoulder. The exclamation point was the Quiksilver All 80’s All Day Vert Challenge won by Tony Hawk and featuring some of the true legends of skateboarding.

That, of course, just covers the special events. I was also super impressed with the buyers and their business first and upbeat attitude. We heard top buyers were finding resources all over the show and were hyper focused on improving their business. That, of course, is the reason we’re all here, but it nevertheless was fantastic to witness firsthand.

What was the biggest highlight of your January show for you?
Again the show had a busy show floor, with more brands than ever and a great amount of head office attendees meeting our Canadian retailers.

The KNOW?SNOW event at Grouse Mountain was also a success in getting over 200 people up the mountain for a night of pow turns, wings and pints.

ispo 2011 not just impressively confirmed its position as the world’s leading sports business platform, it
reached new heights within the entire sporting goods industry. With more than 80,000 visiting industry
professionals from 106 countries the 71st ispo experienced a historical increase of more than 25%
compared to the prior year, and thus set a new visitor record. In addition to Germany, the countries
with the strongest increase in visitors included Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France, the Russian
Federation, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Norway and the USA.
ispo 11’s race to the top was already evident before the event opened: the number of exhibitors
increased by 200 to 2,267, the net exhibition space by about 13 percent to 101,100 sqm. The entire
expanse of the New Munich Trade Fair, covering a total of 185,000 sqm, was completely booked. Like
in prior years, ispo once again confirmed its highly international character: 67 percent of visitors and 84
percent of exhibitors came from abroad.
