Live From GoPro’s Global Launch In Squaw Valley | CEO Nick Woodman on new Karma Drone, Hero5 & Future Tech

Monday, September 19 — 9:30 a.m. —GoPro has gathered more than 300 media, ambassadors, and staff at Squaw Valley, California, this week for the global unveil of its long-awaited Karma drone and the Hero5 cameras. CEO Nick Woodman just wrapped up an epic keynote talk on the product, which included him sharing a real time video of his sons learning to ride their bikes for the first time with no training wheels. Woodman edited the video in front of the crowd in two minutes time using the new Quik app, which also launched today.

Woodman left the Karma announcement to last, unveiling a slim backpack he’d worn on stage when making his entrance. From the bag he revealed the new Karma drone, a compact device that fits—alongside a detachable stabilizer—into a sleek case, which can be stored inside the lightweight backpack.

“We decided Karma should be much more than a drone, it should be an end-to-end life capture solution,” said Woodman. “Capturing your life from these perspectives is so incredible. We wanted to make it accessible to everybody. People will be surprised how easy Karma is to fly.”

What sets the drone apart from most on the market is a compact, foldable structure that fits easily in a lightweight backpack, plus an integrated touch screen display, giving consumers the ability to see where they are flying and eliminating the need for another mobile device. The drone also features a 3-axis camera stabilizer, which can be removed from the drone and attached to a handheld system called the Karma Grip for capturing ultra-smooth footage.

The company is leveraging the launch of its new Hero5 Black ($399) and Hero5 Session ($299) cameras, among several surprises, including a cloud-based subscription platform called GoPro Plus, which provides easy anytime access to sharing and editing content. Hand in hand with the service is the roll out of GoPro’s new Quik editing app for both mobile and desktops.

The Karma, stabilizer, and backpack is priced at $799. If you don’t already own a GoPro, the Hero5 Session is bundled with the drone at $999, available early 2017. The Hero Black also has a bundle option at $1099.

They’ve also leaked that later this year we can expect to see a key-chain, micro-USB card reader that plugs into phones to quickly transfer photos and videos from your GoPro. Also on the horizon: a voice-activated remote that extends the voice control range of HERO5 cameras while providing one-button remote control.

On Shelf Dates:

· HERO5 and HERO5 Session On Shelf – 10/2
· Karma On Shelf – 10/23
· GoPro Plus – $4.99/monthly after a free trial. Available in the US on 10/2 and in additional markets beginning January 2017

Stay tuned for the full story from today’s event in Squaw, including live updates from CEO Nick Woodman’s keynote talk, and product testing throughout the day.
