The man, the myth, the legend: Jake Burton Carpenter gives an insider’s look into his hugely influential life and career
Jake Burton Carpenter is a man that can’t be kept down. From personal trials to professional successes, Burton is one of the pioneers of snowboarding, and has built one of the most well-known brands on the planet. Snowboarder Magazine sat down with Jake in an extremely frank and candid discussion, titled “A Paper Trail: The Jake Burton Carpenter Interview”, an interview that ranged from Jake’s founding of the Burton brand, to his numerous struggles and subsequent victories with his health.
From the beginning, Jake possessed a tenacity and drive to succeed that has outpaced many in his industry. He’s gone from being, as he puts it, “this kid that people would say about, “We want to meet Mr. Burton. We want to meet your father,” to being the grandfather of the sport overnight.” Throughout it all, he’s never lost his desire for success.
From the Snowboarder interview:
Next year Burton will be celebrating its 40th year in business. Seems crazy.
Certainly is. I went from being this kid that people would say about, “We want to meet Mr. Burton. We want to meet your father,” to being the grandfather of the sport overnight. It feels like it happened so fast. I really love my job. I love what I do. I love the way people treat and respect me. I guess you could say there is the hater thing out there, but nobody has ever, ever said anything like that to my face. Ever… You know, everybody likes to be complimented or respected. I think everybody likes to be looked up to and envied, selfishly speaking. Everybody likes to make a few bucks, be comfortable, go on great trips, be able to do stuff with your kids and have your kids respect you and want to snowboard with you. This is such a killer job and such an insane lifestyle, and nobody has the opportunity to live any better than I do. The benefits of my job are fucking ridiculous.
At times, this was a heavy read: Jake has gone through more in his life than many. However, there were also instances of humor, as is common with Jake. But the theme that occurred again and again was strength. Strength to go your own way, to survive, to be your most true self.
