The Zumiez 100K went off in Keystone once again this year, with more than 1,100 of the retailer’s employees, plus industry VIPS and special guests, gathering to honor the top salespeople of 2012. This year’s No. 1 shop kid was Matthew Edwards of Gilroy, California, and the laundry list of prizes awarded to him is nothing short of amazing, including vehicles from Diamond, Skullcandy, and Glamour Kills, trips from Burton, Vans, Volcom, Ice Cream, Kr3W/Supra, and many other one-of-a-kind prizes from across the skateboarding and snowboarding industry.
The exclusive private event aims to incorporate the biggest names in the industry into a day of snowboarding, a 90-minute ceremony, a massive after party and an after-after party, all “scientifically designed to blow fucking minds,” according to the crew at Zumiez.
But the real story behind the event is the company’s intention of giving back. Zumiez covers the costs for employees to travel to Keystone every January to give back to them for their hard work over the year and many of its employees the opportunity to snowboard together, try out next year’s product, and share in a celebration of action sports culture, according to the company.
This year’s theme was “Zumiez 100K: The Motion Picture,” which featured special guests ranging from R2D2, Iron Man, Shooter McGavin (actor Christopher McDonald), “Mini-Me” Verne Troyer, and performances from Deadmau5 and Odd Future members.
More than 150 brands and 400 special guests were also on hand to say thank you to the Zumiez sales employees, including athletes and brand founders like Jake Burton, Richard Woolcott, Ken Block, Jamie Thomas, Stevie Williams, Shaun Neff, Nick Tershay, Shepard Fairey, and Pharrell Williams.
Burton also took the top five salespeople over to Vail for a day of snowboarding with Jake Burton, John Jackson, Luke Mitrani, Danny Davis and the rest of the team, while Girl is bringing the top 10 salespeople to their 20th Anniversary party later this year.
