Tony Magnusson Wins $500 Cash and Custom Wooden Paddle Trophy
Saturday August 1st marked the First Annual Westside Paddle Battle in Costa Mesa, CA at The Wayfarer Bar and Restaurant. The event was titled as an action sports industry ping pong tournament, and also attracted US Open attendees and spectators of all kinds.
The brands and their supporters piled into The Wayfarer mid-day Saturday as the battles kicked off. While the sun heated up outside, so did the competition inside. Drinks were flowing, music was blasting (provided DJ Dax), and the event showed who the true ping pong slayers of the industry were.
A few of the industry participants included Todd Kellogg of Lira, MADSTEEZ (Mark Paul Deren) of Blisss Mag, Andrew Atkinson of Hurley, Dean Bradley of Cutlass, Charlie Anderson of Otis, Industry veteran Tony Magnusson of Osiris and H Street and also a nice addition to the lineup was the owner and operator of The Wayfarer, Jeff Chon.
As we would like to say "everyone is a winner", sadly on this day that was not the case. Tony Magnusson, a Swedish semi-retired professional skateboarder and part-owner of Osiris Shoes, walked into the Wayfarer with confidence and slayed the competition. He took home The 1st place custom wooden paddle trophy, industry bragging rights for an entire year, and last but not least $500 cash.
As The First annual Battle, this event showed true potential for the years to come. I know at the 2nd annual I will have my skills sharpened, a brand new paddle and a take-no-prisoners attitude. Until next year!
