Boost Mobile To Sponsor WCT Trestles Event

Posted 04.11.2002
Boost Mobile has acquired the ASP License to stage a World Championship Tour (WCT) event at the world famous Lower Trestles in Southern California, the only WCT event on USA mainland soil. The event will be named the Boost Mobile Pro presented by Billabong and will be held September 5-14 carrying a prize purse of 250,000 dollars.Boost Mobile is a lifestyle based telecommunications company headquartered in Irvine, California. Boost Mobiles’ product range includes pre-paid mobile phones, “Re-Boost” pre-paid phone cards and a wide range of telecommunications accessories and services directed at the youth and action sports markets.

Lower Trestles, locally know as Lowers, is located between Los Angeles and San Diego on the northern edge of the Camp Pendleton Marine Base, just one mile south of San Clemente and 15 miles north of Oceanside. As a south facing rock bottom point break, Trestles offers consistent, quality peeling rights and the occasional excellent shaped left. Because of its consistency, Lowers is the perfect competition site.

With the arrival of the WCT to Lower Trestles again, Southern California will be host to some of the best competitive surfing the tour has seen since the Billabong Pro in 1999 where Andy Irons (Haw) was victorious over Jake Paterson (Aus).

Defending champion and Boost Mobile team rider Andy Irons was excited to hear the news, “I am really looking forward to competing and defending my title at Trestles, it is such a rippable wave. It is also awesome to have Boost Mobile as the title sponsor who have been great supporters of surfing and the industry.”

Expect the rest of the Top 45 to take up the challenge, alongside ASP wildcard Kelly Slater (USA), the greatest competitive surfer in history, and the two event wildcard nominations, which will include Bruce Irons, the current Pipe Masters champion (and also a Boost Mobile team rider) and the overall champion from the Billabong/Boost Mobile Junior Surfing Series, to be decider later this year in California.

Other top contenders to watch include reigning World Champion CJ Hobgood (USA), the Lopez brothers and 2000 World Champion Sunny Garcia (Haw). There will also be a strong contingent of Australians headed up by perennial inform Mark Occhilupo, and the young Australian upstarts, Taj Burrow, Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson.

Peter Adderton, Boost Mobile’s President and CEO, said he was excited about the opportunity to deliver a WCT event back to California. “This is a huge win for surfing and Californian surfing in particular. Trestles is an awesome wave and all the guys on the tour have been great in supporting Boost Mobile in making this happen. We wanted to do something exciting in conjunction with our launch into the US market to demonstrate our support of the surf industry, and the Boost Mobile Pro is the ideal way for us to do that.”

ASP International President/CEO Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew was equally enthusiastic: “ASP International is also delighted to be able to announce the return of World Championship Tour surfing to North America. ‘Lowers’ at Trestles is a world-class venue, totally conducive to the dynamics of contemporary pro surfing, and this event will provide a major boost to American surfing. I congratulate Peter Adderton for bringing Boost Mobile Phones to the WCT arena, this long-term WCT License is just the shot the ASP World Tour needs to go to the next level.”
