Boasting bluebird skies and massive crowds, Stratton Mountain hosted the 30th Annual Burton US Open halfpipe competition this weekend, sending winners Shaun White and Elena Hight home $25,000 richer, with some serious bragging rights. The battle between top riders like White, Iouri Podladtchikov, Louie Vito, Danny Davis and Danny Kass made for a nail-biter of a final. Though White made sure to stomp the win with his first run, the rest of the podium wasn't decided until after run three, with both Louie Vito and Vermont-native Benji Farrow taking 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The Women's Halfpipe Final played host to the upset of the season: with a score of 86.50 and a run that included back-to-back 900s, Hight stepped up to put an end to Kelly Clark's 16-competition winning streak. Clark came in second by only 3/10ths of a point, with Ellery Hollingsworth rounding out the podium in third.
"Coming to the 2012 Burton US Open was amazing," Shaun White said. "It was great to see Jake and be a part of this historical event. I'm proud to take home this victory."
In addition to US Open halfpipe titles, several other major awards were handed out at the competition: I-Pod and Kelly Clark took home the 2012 Burton Global Open Series halfpipe championship titles, Jamie Anderson and Ryo Aono earned the MINI Countryman, and Ellery Hollingsworth and Taku Hiraoka won the halfpipe Creative Use of Space awards. The Nokia Rookie Award, worth $5,000 was given to both Arielle Gold and Ayumu Hirano.
Wrapping up the Open, Stratton Mountain hosted 'The Night Jam,' at its main base. Boasting a custom set-up and the biggest crowd yet, the Jam offered cash prizes for six different categories, with a total purse of $17,000.
