I bet Tom Curren never thought he’d share the stage with Evil Knievel.

Chili Peppers To Perform At ESPN Awards

Posted 03.13.2002
Multi-platinum selling musical artists Red Hot Chili Peppers will be presented with the Artist Contribution Award at the second annual ESPN Action Sports & Music Awards Fueled by Mountain Dew, it was announced today by Ron Semiao, ESPN vice president, programming and managing director, Global X. The pioneer event that unites the hottest action sports athletes, musical artists and Hollywood celebrities will be held Saturday, April 13 at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, Calif. The Red Hot Chili Peppers will also perform at the event, marking the first time the band has played a U.S. venue in more than a year. “The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been an influential part of the skate culture for many years,” Semiao explained. “Street skateboarders listened to them in the eighties when the action sports genre wasn’t even developed. Today, athletes from all disciplines are listening to Chili Peppers CDs as they take their sports to new levels. We are thrilled to honor them as an influential band to the action sports movement. And we very much look forward to their performance at the Action Sports and Music Awards.”

Metallica received the Action Sports & Music Awards Artist Contribution Award last year, an event that featured musical performances by Black Sabbath, Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals, Crazy Town, De La Soul featuring Busta Rhymes and Incubus. Announcements concerning additional musical artists and celebrity presenters for 2002 are forthcoming.
