“January 22, 2010 (DENVER, CO)—With an estimated 20,000 attendees packing the Convention Center in Denver for the SnowSports Industries America (SIA) trade show at the end of the month, a movement has emerged to engage more youth in winter sports.
The SIA Snow Show itself highlights some of the latest trends and innovations in the winter sports industry while showcasing the importance of the $3 billion industry to the U.S. and Colorado's economy. A number of Show attendees, representing manufacturers, retailers, resorts and nonprofits have joined forces with government agencies and politicians to promote the benefits of getting youth involved in winter sports activities
On Saturday, January 30, member organizations of the burgeoning Recreation Outdoor Initiative (ROI) movement, sponsored by SIA, will host the first National Youth Summit. Member organizations of the ROI currently combine to ensure 50,000 youth are involved in winter sports each season, and the focus will be to double the effort so that one million youth are involved in winter sports by 2020.
Hundreds of Denver students who have participated in winter sports programs will gather at the Colorado Convention Center to listen to speakers discuss the importance of getting more youth in winter sports activities, before departing to enjoy the day skiing and snowboarding at Copper Mountain and Keystone Resort.
Speakers for the Youth Summit include former and current heads of SIA and National Ski Areas Association, who will discuss efforts by manufacturers, retailers and resorts to get kids in winter sports. All speakers and high profile attendees will be made available for questions by the media following the event.
In addition to raising awareness on the importance of getting kids into winter sports, the Youth Summit serves as a celebratory capstone for sixteen states that declared January "Learn a Snow Sport Month."
