Core stores on the ActionWatch Retail Panel report that both hardgoods and footwear categories experienced lower comp sales declines in June compared to the previous month. Hardgoods sales were down 13.7% compared to June last year while footwear sales were down 14.1%. However, that's where the relatively good news stops.
Apparel, accessories and wetsuits all showed greater sales declines in June than in the previous month (see the line chart below). The deepening declines of these categories brought the overall sales number lower to -17.8% (compared to last month's -15.2%). Although none of the second-quarter months' sales declines were as low as in February and March, the June number is obviously taking us in the wrong direction. Nevertheless, we can be thankful that the sales decline of the full second quarter was shallower than that of the first quarter and hopeful that this will prove to be a directional trend.
