OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE – Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California (July 23, 2008) – As the surf world invades Huntington Beach for the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing presented by O'Neill, look for Mosaic surfers Sofia Mulanovich, Courtney Conlogue and Kassia Meador to be at the center of the action. Between surfing in the women's U.S. Open heats this week, the girls will be signing autographs and hosting events.
Mulanovich, who is currently ranked number one in the world, won the Open in 2006 and makes a point of returning to the Open every summer. "I love surfing in the Open," says Mulanovich. "It is the perfect mid-summer break to catch up with friends and get mentally ready for the second half of the [WCT] tour."
The 2004 World Champion begins surfing in the round of 48 starting on Wednesday, July 23rd at 9:30AM. Catch up with Mulanovich at the Boarding for Breast Cancer event on Thursday evening, the Red Bull signing on Friday at 3:30 and at this year's Surfing Hall of Fame Induction Party, an honor that she received last year.
Joining Mulanovich in the round of 48 at the U.S. Open is up-and-comer, Courtney Conlogue. The 15-year-old took full advantage of her local knowledge on the Huntington Beach Pier's beach break in Sunday's opening rounds of the S3 Supergirl Pro Junior. Making the best of small conditions in the semi-finals on Sunday, Conlogue excelled in tough competition against ASP WQS ratings leader and qualifier for the 2009 ASP Women's World Tour, Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) to advance to this Saturday's S3 Supergirl finals.
"Having my home break, the HB Pier, be the site for so many contests allows me to figure out how to find waves even in the most challenging of conditions," explains Conlogue. "Combine that local knowledge with a pinch of luck and I hope to do very well in both the Open and the S3 Supergirl this week." Conlogue won the 2008 Vans Pier Classic, an ASP WQS 2-star event, held this past March at the Huntington Beach Pier.
Kassia Meador is stepping off of her longboard to take on TV hosting duties this week. She's hosting the S3 Supergirl Pro Junior to air on CBS Sports, Fuel TV and other networks to be announced. As well, Kassia will be covering both the men's and women's events of the U.S. Open for Fuel's Boost Mobile Weekly Update and the Daily Habit and for RushHD.
Sofia Mulanovich is supported by Roxy, Red Bull, MoviStar, Reef Footwear, Lan, Channel Islands Surfboards, and DaKine.
Courtney Conlogue is supported by Billabong, Reef Footwear, Smith Eyewear, Toyota of Huntington Beach, Surfing America, Huntington Surf and Sport, Bushman Surfboards, Dakine, Nixon, Sex Wax and Go211.com
