“We have seen consistent surfing from Shaun in the past few years and it’s great to see him get his first World Qualifying Series (WQS) win in his backyard,” stated Frankie D’Andrea, Ocean Minded’s team manager. “This is a great start to the North American tour and will put Shaun closer to his goal of making the ASP World Tour.”
After five days of tough competition, Ward dominated the Final against Austin Ware, Brad Ettinger, and Dylan Graves with a score of 15.25. Ward’s high performance surfing set him apart from his fellow finalists, as he claimed his first WQS win. The fact that Huntington Beach is Ward’s hometown makes the win even sweeter for him.
“It is a dream come true to win a contest right here at home in Huntington Beach! I have been trying to win for a while, and this provides the confidence I need going into the next event,” said Ward.
Jason Miller finished the Pier Classic in fifth place, and his talent shone throughout the whole contest. Miller won four heats in a row and goes into his next event with significant momentum.
“I’m happy with this contest’s results and excited to get some practice for the contest at Lower Trestles in April,” said Miller. “I’m stoked for my teammate Shaun. He performed well throughout the whole event and it’s awesome for him to win at home.”
