Sanuk Strikes Gold With ‘Sidewalk Surfer;’ Wins ‘Item of Year’ 2007

Sanuk Sidewalk SurferA sandal within a shoe? Who would of ever thought it? Jeff Kelley – founder of the Irvine-based surf brand Sanuk – did and now the small, 8-year-old business  located in Southern California has been honored  Footwear Plus’  prestigious “Footwear Item of the Year 2007” award,  according to a press release issued Feb. 12.

Kelley’s designs are all unqiue, but the “Sidewalk Surfer” – sandals that have an upper shoe portion attached to them – gained the company serious credit for inventing a whole new category in casual footwear, according to the release. That’s not to mention that the product has been spotted on famous feet, such as Brad Pitt, Zach Effron, Shia LeBouf and Johnny Rotten.

“Our dealer  network is wild,” Kelley said. “It runs the gamut form Barneys New York to Fred Segal’s in LA. Just about every surf shop in America as well as standout outdoor accounts such as REI and Eastern Mountain Sports.”

The “Not A Shoes” – as the company has fondly nicknamed them, are available for both women and men and can be viewed at the official Sanuk Web site or by checking out Footwear Plus HERE.
