Last night marked another successful year of SIMA’s Image Awards being held stateside, after moving the event in 2010 from its roots in Los Cabos, Mexico during the SIMA Surf Summit. Industry executives and VIPs turned out in style at Anaheim’s The Grove, Thursday evening, as infamous FUEL  host and TV personality Pat Parnell took over the mic in typical fashion, keeping the audience on their toes by throwing the occasional curve ball.

Drummer  Byron McMackin of  Pennywise fame emerged mid-way through the ceremony along with surf legend Peter “PT” Townend to help Parnell honor several of the winners, and four-time world champion Lisa Anderson made a guest cameo to pass out an Image Award to fellow Floridians and Ft. Lauderdale’s Maui Nix, who took home Breakthrough Retailer of the Year.

Huntington Surf and Sport Owner Aaron Pai and his entire crew took the stage to accept both Women’s and Men’s Retailer of the Year awards. Pai, who was ecstatic and thanked the likes of Bob Hurley, Bob McKnight, his dedicated staff, and his wife for making the store what it is today, jumped around on stage and was even coaxed to take a sip from a bottle of Peligroso tequilla Parnell had on hand.

One of the most heartfelt speeches came from Ryan Hurley, one of the brand’s lead designers, while accepting the award for Men’s Boardshort of the Year. In addition to thanking the industry and fellow crew members, he paid due respect to his dad Bob Hurley for founding the brand.

Michael “MT” Tomson presented the final award of the night, Breakthrough Brand of the Year, giving his top three criteria of how the winning brand should be selected: Strong brand DNA, showing creativity in production and execution, and defining a clear purpose. With tight competition, the crew from Stance led by President John Wilson ascended the podium and gave a humble speech, recognizing the other nominees and a long list of people who contributed to the brand’s success.
